Federer vs. Del Potro in the French Open semis
Paris, France – Every tube/telly/box (whatever you might call it) around the world will be tuned into this much-anticipated semi-final clash at the French Open on Friday June 5 2009. Not so much for the minnow Juan Martin Del Potro but because of Federer and what is at stake for him. Everything. In this match and should he go through to Sunday’s final, everything is on the line. A Federer win in the semis and the final would change the whole landscape of tennis, currently and historically. A Federer win would mean he would complete a career Grand Slam, winning all four majors, and go down in history as a GOAT (greatest of all time) player. A Federer loss (oh, the unthinkable) in the semis or the final would make it more and more unlikely he will ever complete his career slam ambitions in the eyes of many and be denied his rightful place in GOAT heaven.

Head-to-head Analysis: Federer leads the head-to-head series with a convincing 5-0 edge, which includes a 2-0 edge in 2009. They met at the 2009 Australian Open quarters and the Madrid Masters semis. Both matches were comprehensive wins for the Swiss.
Tennis Betting Analysis:
Federer chasing history
It cannot be stressed enough how important this tournament has become to Federer and to the sport now that Nadal, and in some part Djokovic as well, are out. The path is cleared of all major obstacles to the title that has so eluded Federer over his career and, almost with a sense of destiny in the air, he need but successfully script the last few pages of the story. Pressure is not enough to describe the weight that rest on his shoulders. But if the next few days work out as the 27-year-old Federer has long dreamt they would, he will equal Pete Sampras ‘s record of 14 Grand Slam titles, a record many believed would withstand the test of time. And he would surpass Pete-boy by joining only six other players to have won all four majors (Pete never won the French Open).
Juan Martin Del Potro vying to breakthrough to a first-ever Grand Slam final
Gaston Gaudio, trying to revive his long fallen-to-the-wayside career and receiving a wild card into the French Open garnered more attention in his homeland than his (Del Potro that is) campaign for the French Open. Serious discussion about Del Potro reaching the French Open semis was not had at the start of the tournament. The draw was loaded with threats that could have stopped him at any point. Yet that is where he is now and he is in an awkward position, a chance in hand to deny Federer a spot (one that many Federer fans believe is his right) in the French Open final. Any which way you slice it Del Potro has an enormous weight on his shoulders as well.
Tennis Betting Verdict: Would Juan Martin Del Potro be so unsporting as to deny Federer his place in history? He might want to but actually doing it is another matter entirely. In five attempts, Juan Martin Del Potro has not made an impression on Federer. He has lost all five encounters meekly, without taking a set off the maestro. The most recent Grand Slam encounter was the 2009 Australian Open and it was an all-out drubbing (6-3, 6-0, 6-0), so awful Del Potro would have us all forget it. The most recent match they played was at the ATP World Masters Madrid – a better accounting of Del Potro indeed, but still a routine straight set loss 6-3, 6-4. There is no doubt that Del Potro is on an upward trajectory and his game is improving. I just don’t believe it has improved as much as it needs to in order to beat Federer. I believe there is much respect for Federer in the locker room and that respect of the Swiss and his accomplishments will play in the back of Del Potro’s mind.
